In Australia, a pet food maker can be fined up to $3,000 for each product it sells.

Pet food companies can also face up to 30 per cent of the value of a product sold to a consumer who buys it without buying pet food.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has warned pet food companies about their potential risks of misleading consumers about their pet food ingredients and that it will be investigating whether any companies are breaching consumer laws.

Pet food manufacturers have long had the power to avoid paying a tax of up to one per cent on the profits they make from pet food sales, but the ACCC said it had seen evidence of the rise of online businesses that were not registered in Australia.

“There are lots of different ways in which people have come up with ways to bypass the registration process, and that’s what the ACCCC has done,” ACCC commissioner Andrew Scipione told the ABC’s Insiders program on Thursday.

“In some cases, you can have an online business that sells food that is not registered, but is being advertised as a registered business.”

If that is the case, the ACCAC will have a look at that, because it’s a serious offence.

“The ACCC is also investigating whether companies have breached consumer laws by not registering with the ACC when they sell pet food in Australia, such as in the United States, the United Kingdom and other countries.

Scipione said online businesses were “doing what they think is right”, but he warned that many of them did not have a formal system in place to register with the government.”

They don’t register their businesses as they’re not registering as a business under Australian law, so they’re in violation of the consumer law,” he said.”

The ACCCC is very keen to see how many people are using these schemes, and we’re very interested to see whether any of these schemes are operating in the way that we would expect them to operate.

“Australian food industry trade body ANZFarm has previously said it did not take responsibility for the food it sold in Australia but said it was “committed to working with the Australian government” to ensure consumers were properly informed about pet food products.

Petfood makers, including PetSmart and Petco, have also been criticised for misleading consumers, particularly by misleading the public about the pet food’s ingredients.

In October last year, PetSmart said it does not contain animal by-products or “sodium” in its pet food as the ACCCA said.

In a statement on the ACCCs website, Petco said the ingredients of its products were “not derived from animals”.”

It’s important that we don’t mislead the Australian public by claiming that Petco is a pet-friendly company,” the company said.

PetSmart said its pet-safe products contained “vegetable based ingredients”, which “are sourced from plants that are non-GMO and certified organic”.

The ACCCs consumer watchdog said it is investigating whether pet food producers have broken the law, and it said it will look into how many of the online businesses are operating legally in Australia to determine if any companies breached consumer law.
