Aussie pet food giant PetfoodPhoenix, whose brand includes pet foods for dogs, cats, rabbits, ferrets and dogs, is the first of India’s big-name brands to roll out a pet food with vegan options.
The company is the latest to offer vegan products, following such names as P.T.I. and Fido Food.
P.T., which is owned by the Australian Pet Food Group, and Frito-Lay, which is part-owned by Nestle India, both have products that contain no meat or animal products.
The brands are all made by companies with a long history of animal rights activism, including BHIM, PetSmart, Petco and PetCare.
PetfoodPhox says the brand’s new vegan products are more accessible to more customers, who are more likely to be vegans.
The new products have been tested in India and are available at the company’s stores.
Pets are the most commonly used pets in the country.
According to the pet food industry, more than half of India is still home to animals.
India is the second-largest pet food market after China.
The country has a population of about 9.8 billion people, making it the third-largest in the world behind China and the United States.
